Da Things Fall Apart a Il crollo: note dall’analisi della traduzione

This article is developed from an in fieri critique of Il crollo (1977), Silvana An-tonioli Cameroni's Italian translation of Chinua Achebe's Things Fall Apart (1958). Following Antoine Berman's project for an ethical and productive translation criticism, this article focuses on the translator's attitude towards two main topics: the unique cultural constitution of the narrator and 'Igblish', Achebe's hybrid postcolonial language. Il crollo is evaluated in the light of Ber-man's ethic and poetic criteria, stating the inadequacy of this translation and its failure in understanding and recreating the complexity of the source text.

George Eliot’s formative years were characterised by her intense activity as a translator which she carried out with methodological scrupulousness and profound sense of responsibility. In her ambition to make a name for herself in the English cultural world she understood, from a very early age, that translation would be the best means of expanding her knowledge while measuring herself against original texts that had made an important impact on European culture. Although Eliot was proficient in several modern and ancient languages (namely, German, French, Italian and Spanish, Latin, Greek and Hebrew), most of her translations were from German. Translations, says Gideon Toury, are facts of target cultures – but the perceived status of source texts has a bearing on how these are reflected or refracted in the target language. This proposition is particularly evident in the case of classics: when translators have to work on literary creations occupying a pivotal position in the source/target cultures, they adopt strategies of literalness and ennoblement which betray a quasi-religious awe – on the one hand, a desire to ruffle the surface of the revered original as little as possible; and on the other, a determination to reproduce the supposed “classical qualities” of the classic even when they are not present in the source. This thesis is a case study in literary translation. It consists of a creative component (60%) — an anthology of contemporary New Zealand women poetry translated into Italian — and a critical component (40%) — an interdisciplinary commentary outlining the historical, linguistic, cultural, literary and translational aspects underpinning my work as editor, literary translator and scholar. My interest in New Zealand literature began with my Master’s thesis, when reading Keri Hulme’s 1985 Booker Prize winning novel the bone people exposed me to the linguistic and cultural specificities of literary works produced in Aotearoa/New Zealand. This interest was further ignited by reading Marinella Rocca Longo’s pioneering study of New Zealand poetry, La poesia neozelandese dalle origini inglesi ai contemporanei, published in 1977.
